Cardinal urges respect amongst atheists and those of faith
Published on May 9, 2008 By Scotteh In Religion

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor has spoken to BBC Radio 4 this morning on an issue regarding the growing tensions in the UK between those with secular and religious beliefs.

The full article can be found here.

It's a nice jesture, but marred perhaps by blaming secular approaches for the likes of Stalin and Hitler. This comes across as quite ironic really, given the kingdoms forged and wars fought in the name of 'God'.

The truth be told evil doesn't come from being religious or non-religious, i've heard countless arguements from both sides of this discussion, 'Look at the Crusades' shortly followed up by 'Yeah, and Hitlers concentration camps?'. It's a moot point as in reality both were brought about due to the failing of man himself.

Anyways worth a read. As ultimatley he is trying to break down the obvious walls that exist in the 'debate' on Science, God and all that jazzy funky stuff.

Secular approaches did breed Hitler and Stalin. The Bible says: "Thou shalt not murder." They did.

The Crusades were the result of everyone being greedy barbarians, and a bit of (now inexistent) corruption in the Catholic church.

I think your confusing dictatorships with secular societies. Seriously, if you want examples of a non-secular society commiting attrocities take a good long look at Britain (where i'm from incidently). We enslaved half the world and all with a Church of England bible in our left hand.

I'm not saying that religion is to blame for the British Empire, but it would be if we were to use your rather narrow minded opinion.

I would like to think that religion is partly to blame for the British Empire.

After all, the British Empire brought the English language and European civilisation to many places in the world plus it managed to abolish slavery worldwide.

Yes that's quite true, but at the same time we also commited many an attrocity.

I guess you missed my point, a country can do good and bad if it is driven by religion, and likewise if it is not.

To say that the USSR and Nazi Germany committed those attrocities because of lack of religious influence is contradictoary to that.
